Founder Jennifer Marks "gave birth" to the idea of an urban family lifestyle center around the time she gave birth to her daughter, Imani. She herself felt the stigma of the lack of places for parents and kids to convene togetheer and hang out, support each other, take classes and shop, all at one location. So she began developing urban family lifestyle where parents and kids could come together, celebrate the best of "family", inspire each other, and find a one-stop location for family resources, specialized events and products. She was inspired to build the business of her dreams.
"I always wanted to run a company--I had created a business from ages 10-13 called 'Anything Company' which definitely influenced this company vision", says Jennifer. "There was such a need for places to go with your kids, where you could do classes together with them or get a break and mingle with other adults, listen to funky music, get your astrology reading or nails done, eat great healthy food, attend wonderful classes and lectures, romp around in a big play space for kids, and shop for really unique and affordable hand-selected products and services that were hard to find. I want to focus on parents kids of all ages (especially catering to tweens and teens)".
She created a web portal for all family things urban and hip, and at the same time supporting other businesses with local community promotions. "Every parent I spoke to was exhausted trying to keep up with some unrealistic ideal of parents depicted to them in the media. I felt it was time to project a more integrated, multicultural, holistic and hip side of parenting back into the media that would include families from all walks of life. Recently it's great to see so many family activity centers popping up all over the country and a very specific need for community-building, and I wanted to bring all those elements and resources together in one location".
The current website is an portal for 3 sub-sites, "urbanmama", "urbandada" and "urbankiddo" to further cater to each of these groups' special interests. The company will be sponsoring local Brooklyn and New York City events in the near future for both parents and kids. "I want families to visit our site and our events and be moved by what they see and do there, to rethink their parenting life as a creative endeavor, meet great people and be encouraged to participate in lectures and services highlighting their special interest and talents". And to definitely spark their children's creative and entrepreneurial desires.
